What’s left of Gaza? Mapping the destruction of one of history’s worst conflicts.

The Gaza Strip has undergone extensive devastation due to the prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7, 2023. Over the past 18 months, relentless airstrikes, ground offensives, and blockades have left much of the territory in ruins, resulting in one of the most severe humanitarian crises in recent history.

Extent of Destruction

  • Widespread Damage: Approximately 60% of Gaza’s buildings have been damaged or destroyed, with northern areas like Gaza City experiencing up to 71% destruction.
  • Infrastructure Collapse: Around 68% of roads have been damaged or destroyed, severely hindering movement and aid delivery.
  • Healthcare System in Crisis: Only 17 of 36 hospitals remain partially functional, all suffering from shortages of fuel, medical supplies, and clean water.
  • Educational Facilities Damaged: Approximately 87% of schools have been hit by munitions or damaged since the conflict began.
  • Debris and Hazardous Materials: The conflict has generated over 37 million metric tons of debris, including more than 800,000 metric tons of asbestos and 7,500 metric tons of unexploded ordnance.

Humanitarian Impact

  • Casualties: Over 51,000 Palestinians have been killed, with a significant number being women and children. AP News+1Reuters+1
  • Displacement: Approximately 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced at least once, many multiple times, due to ongoing hostilities.
  • Healthcare Collapse: The blockade has led to the suspension of critical health services, including a U.N.-backed polio vaccination campaign intended for over 600,000 children.
  • Famine Risk: The blockade has halted aid deliveries, leading to widespread starvation and malnutrition, with 60,000 children already showing signs of malnutrition.

Current Situation

As of April 2025, the situation in Gaza remains dire. Israeli airstrikes continue, targeting areas across the enclave, including Khan Younis, Jabaliya, and Nuseirat. These strikes have resulted in additional civilian casualties and the destruction of equipment essential for rescue operations.

The cessation of designated humanitarian zones has further exacerbated the crisis, leaving civilians and aid workers without safe havens. The international community continues to call for immediate humanitarian access and a resolution to the conflict to prevent further loss of life and infrastructure. www.multilinks.biz

The scale of destruction in Gaza is unprecedented, with vast areas rendered uninhabitable. The humanitarian crisis continues to deepen, underscoring the urgent need for a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the conflict.
