Babangida regrets annulling June 12 presidential election.

Former Nigerian military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has publicly expressed regret over the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. At the launch of his autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” in Abuja on Thursday, Babangida took full responsibility for the decision, acknowledging that mistakes were made during his tenure. He admitted that Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party, won the election.

In his memoir, Babangida reflects on the annulment, stating, “I regret June 12. I accept full responsibility for the decisions taken, and June 12 happened under my watch. Mistakes, missteps happened in quick succession.” He also expressed satisfaction with former President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to acknowledge Abiola’s victory and honor him with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic title.
