Bomber Given 10 Years in Prison for Trying to Kill Japanese Premier

A Japanese court has sentenced Ryuji Kimura to 10 years in prison for attempting to assassinate former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The incident occurred in April 2023 during a campaign event in Wakayama, where Kimura threw a homemade pipe bomb at Kishida. Although the prime minister was unharmed, two individuals sustained minor injuries. Kimura was convicted of attempted murder and four other charges, including violations of explosives and weapons laws. Despite his claim that he intended only to express dissatisfaction with Japan’s election system, the court determined that his actions posed a serious threat to democracy. This attack came less than a year after the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during a campaign speech, highlighting concerns about the security of public officials in Japan.
