On June 3, 2025, the Lagos State Government announced that individuals caught illegally dumping refuse or littering public spaces will face a fine of ₦250,000 or up to three months’ imprisonment. This measure, introduced by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, aims to enforce the Lagos Sanitation Environmental Law and address environmental concerns in the state. www.multilinks.biz

The government emphasized that repeat offenders will encounter even harsher penalties. To ensure compliance, enforcement agencies such as the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) are actively monitoring and prosecuting violators. www.multilinks.biz

Residents are encouraged to utilize registered Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for waste disposal and to report any infractions through LAWMA’s helpline: 080000LAWMA (08000052962) or 07080601020. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote environmental sustainability and public health in Lagos State.
