LONDON (Reuters) – The UK has launched an investigation into Apple and Google’s smartphone operating systems, app stores, and browsers, marking its second use of newly strengthened regulatory powers to scrutinize major tech firms.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced it will evaluate whether Apple and Google hold “strategic market status” within smartphone ecosystems and examine their impact on users and businesses creating content and services like apps.
CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell highlighted the potential benefits of increased competition in mobile ecosystems, emphasizing that it could drive innovation and create new opportunities across services such as app stores, browsers, and operating systems.
“Greater competition could also stimulate growth in the UK, enabling businesses to introduce innovative products and services on Apple and Google’s platforms,” Cardell said.
