The Japan National Tourism Organization reported a record number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan in 2024.
The number of tourists rose by 8.2%, reaching 621,100, with a 25.5% increase compared to 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
This marks the second consecutive year of record-breaking Vietnamese tourism to Japan.
According to the JNTO’s Vietnamese operations, Vietnamese tourists often prefer Southeast Asian countries and China over Japan, due to lower costs and the availability of visa waivers or more straightforward visa processes in those regions.
The impact of Typhoon Yagi in early September 2024 slowed Vietnamese travel demand during the latter half of the year. However, monthly data showed that the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan in 2024 remained consistently higher than in previous years.

On January 15, the JNTO announced that Japan welcomed 36.9 million foreign tourists in 2024, a 47.1% increase from 2023, surpassing the numbers from 2019.
Arrivals were concentrated during peak periods such as the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, as well as the school summer holidays.
Visitor numbers grew not only from East Asia, traditionally the largest source of tourists, but also from Southeast Asia, Europe, the Americas, Australia, and the Middle East.
The upcoming six-month-long World Expo, set to open in Osaka in April 2025, is expected to capture global attention. JNTO anticipates that the number of visitors to Japan will continue to rise during the event.
