The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised alarms over the increasing involvement of Nigerian youths in cybercrime, particularly in Lagos State. Assistant Commander of the EFCC, Ahmed Ghali, expressed these concerns during a seminar titled “The Role of the Boy Child in Community Development and Safety,” organized by the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Surulere, Lagos.
Ghali highlighted that many young individuals are jeopardizing their futures in pursuit of quick wealth through fraudulent online activities. He emphasized that while the internet can be a tool for positive development, its misuse for criminal purposes not only harms victims but also derails the personal goals of the perpetrators. He urged youths to channel their energy and creativity into legitimate online ventures rather than engaging in scams.
The EFCC’s concerns are not isolated. The commission has previously warned about the escalating dangers associated with internet fraud, noting that some cybercriminals are now involved in more severe crimes, including armed robbery and ritual killings. This underscores the urgent need for collective efforts to address the root causes of cybercrime among youths.
In response to these challenges, the EFCC is advocating for increased collaboration between public and private sectors, educational institutions, and community organizations to promote integrity and discipline among young people. Initiatives like the PCRC seminar aim to educate youths on the consequences of cybercrime and the importance of contributing positively to society.
