At Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S25 Series Unpacked event on January 22 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, a bold message appeared on the screen: “Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the show isn’t over.” Moments later, a sleek and ultra-slim smartphone design was revealed, followed by the name “Galaxy S25 Edge” lighting up the display.
Samsung has built a reputation for surprising audiences by teasing its most significant next-generation products toward the conclusion of each Unpacked event. This year, the spotlight was on the ultra-slim Galaxy S25 Edge.
The venue was filled with eager attendees hoping to get a closer look at the device, though Samsung withheld full specifications. However, industry insiders who saw the phone in person estimate its thickness to be around 6.4mm. This represents a reduction of up to 22% compared to the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s 8.2mm thickness, giving the S25 Edge a distinctly slimmer profile than most standard smartphones.
Roh Tae-moon, president and head of Samsung Electronics’ MX division, shed light on the inspiration behind the name “Galaxy S25 Edge” during the press conference. “We first introduced the term ‘Edge’ with the Galaxy Note Edge in 2014 to represent a product that is ‘cool and trendy’ with cutting-edge technology. That same spirit lives on today,” he explained.
Back in 2014, the “Edge” specifically referred to the curved design of the phone’s corners, a feature that helped set the device apart.
