Suspected Islamist fighters, believed to be members of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), launched coordinated attacks on two Nigerian military bases in Borno State on March 24, 2025. The first attack occurred around 9:00 PM GMT in Wajiroko, where insurgents overran an army forward operation base, set military equipment ablaze, and killed at least four soldiers, including the brigade commander, while injuring several others. Air force jets later reinforced the base, killing many attackers, though control of the base remains uncertain. Around the same time, militants targeted a second base in Wulgo on the Cameroon border; casualty figures from this attack are currently unknown.

These incidents are part of a broader pattern of increased attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP in northeastern Nigeria. In January 2025, at least 20 Nigerian soldiers were killed in a suspected ISWAP attack on a remote army base in Malam-Fatori, Borno State. Additionally, in November 2024, five Nigerian soldiers were killed in a raid by ISWAP militants on a military base near the Niger border. These groups have intensified their assaults on military and civilian targets, leading to significant casualties and displacement in the region.
