In response to escalating violence and banditry across Nigeria, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has deployed special anti-bandit squads nationwide. This directive, issued on April 22, 2025, mandates all Police Mobile Force (PMF) squadrons to maintain at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on constant standby. The move aims to provide rapid support to state commands during crises, high-risk operations, or emergency interventions. www.multilinks.biz

This action follows recent attacks in Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto States, where bandits killed 21 people. Similar incidents have been reported in Plateau, Enugu, and other regions, prompting the IG to emphasize the PMF’s role as a swift and decisive strike force. www.multilinks.biz

Previously, the Nigeria Police Force inaugurated a 169-man Special Intervention Squad (SIS) trained to tackle banditry, kidnapping, and other crimes. This unit was developed with support from international partners, including the U.S. Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, and trained at the Police Mobile Force Training College in Nasarawa State. www.multilinks.biz

The IG’s recent deployment underscores a renewed commitment to national security and the protection of citizens amid rising insecurity, does not undermine the fact that citizens must take charge of their own security by being vigilant, community information sharing with security agencies.
